Bardan says : "The more palatable alternative to Eldoth, Garrick is just as useless. A nice lore rating is a characteristic of all bards, but in BG1, they seem to be accompanied by a terrible stat line. Don't get Garrick anywhere near combat - his 9 constitution and low hit points means he'll croak faster than a frog under the wicked knife of a sadistic high-school biology teacher. Spells? Not with 13 intelligence, mate.
Garrick's one saving grace is that his 16 dexterity makes him passable at using his crossbow. He will defend Skie against Eldoth if you are weird enough to have all three in your party, and that's about it. Keep him at the back, and use him as a backup spellcaster/archer.
Oh, one more thing - he is one of the most annoying NPCs ever created. If he doesn't get on your nerves, you're either meeting the Pope tomorrow to give him a lecture on tolerance, or you have the sound turned off. Either way, it's not worth it. Dump Garrick."
