Bardan says : "Ah, apart from Imoen, Montaron and Xzar are the first recruitable NPCs you will meet. Montaron is a capable thief, thanks to his halfling bonuses and 17 dexterity, but is also a decent fighter. If any thief in the game could be said to be the backstabber, it is Montaron. Give him studded leather, the Shortsword of Backstabbing, and you have a highly capable one-strike killer.
Of course, Montaron is evil, and he won't fit in with most parties, despite his usefulness. Also, you must remember that Montaron and Xzar are a partnership, and you have to have both, or neither.
