Where he is

Jan can be found selling black market vegetables in the Government District.

Biography

When asked about his past, Jan stops tinkering with his gadgets and states that, despite all claims to the contrary, turnip beer has wondrous medicinal properties in addition to its fine taste.

Special

Jan has his own quest involving his ex-girfriend.

Bardan says, "Where to start? Jan is insane. Not insanely good, not insanely powerful, just insane. However, he's a damn good NPC. His high dexterity, Gnomish bonuses and his Jansen Techno-Gear give him astounding thieving scores. He can't hide in shadows for toffee (but who cares? With a strength like that, you'd have to be nuts to have him backstabbing), but his other stats are godly. He can find traps, detect illusions, open locks and pick pockets so well that he's really the only thief you'll ever need in the game. Added to this, he's a specialist mage. His multi-class means he levels up slowly, but his skills are indispensable.

There is really only one thing you have to remember with Jan - keep him away from the enemy. Give him a crossbow, a staff or sword, and leave him at the back to unleash spell after spell. As an illusionist, he loses out on some decent spells (Death Spell and Skull Trap being the most noteable), but he gets the most important spells. His Project Image and Mislead can be used or abused to fantastic lengths, giving you practically endless spells! His intelligence is fair, meaning you won't get too many failures in terms of memorising new spells, but the massive proliferation of scrolls and intelligence-boosting potions in the game renders this aspect pretty obsolete anyway.

He may annoy you if you're the serious type, but otherwise you'll be rolling on the floor laughing at Jan's antics. No story or legend is too awe-inspiring for Jan to compare to one of his family mishaps, and he has a disturbing desire to possess Boo, Minsc's little furry chum.

Jan comes highly recommended from me and just about every other BG fan with a sense of humour. Go get him at least once. You'll not regret it."
